Panamanian Geisha coffee: the most expensive coffee in the world
The Panamanian Geisha coffee is today considered one of the rarest and most prestigious coffees in the world. Its price can reach astronomical sums at certain auctions, and its refined taste makes it a unique tasting experience for specialty coffee lovers.
But what makes this coffee so special and why is it so expensive?
The origin and history of Geisha coffee
Geisha coffee (or Gesha) finds its origins in Ethiopia, where it was discovered in the 1930s. It was then introduced to Panama in the 1960s, where it thrived thanks to the unique terroir of the highlands of the Boquete region.
It was notably the Hacienda La Esmeralda farm that made this coffee known worldwide by winning a series of prestigious competitions, thus revealing its exceptional floral aromas and unique complexity.
Why is Geisha coffee so expensive?
Several factors explain the high price of Panamanian Geisha coffee:
Limited and demanding production
Geisha is a delicate variety, requiring optimal growing conditions:
- High altitude: It is grown between 1,500 and 1,800 meters, which gives it a slow maturation and an intense aromatic profile.
- Ideal climate: The combination of humidity, heat, and the volcanic richness of the Panamanian soil allows the coffee to develop its full range of flavors.
- Hand harvesting: Each cherry is carefully selected by hand to guarantee impeccable quality.
An exceptional aromatic profile
Panamanian Geisha is renowned for its floral and fruity notes, often compared to those of an Earl Grey tea or a refined white wine. It features aromas of jasmine, bergamot, peach, honey, and lemongrass, with a bright acidity and a natural sweetness on the palate.
Strongly growing global demand
This coffee is highly prized by specialty baristas and roasters, which fuels its rarity and drives up its price at auctions.
In 2022, some Geisha micro-lots sold for more than $2,000 per kilo at the Best of Panama auctions.

Good to know: how to taste a Geisha coffee?
If you are lucky enough to taste a Geisha coffee, here are a few tips to fully appreciate its flavors:
- Prefer a pour-over method such as the V60, Chemex, or Aeropress to enhance its delicate aromas.
- Use filtered water to avoid altering the aromatic profile.
- Respect the appropriate grind: Too fine, it risks accentuating bitterness; too coarse, it will dull the coffee's complexity.
- Take the time to smell the aromas before tasting: The first step of tasting is olfactory.
